DOMETAIA ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK
Dometaia Archaeological Park
Dometaia is a locality just 10 minutes by car from Nerbona, which can also be reached walking through the woods.
The first excavations date back to the 19th century. Subsequently, some more accurate investigations between 1972 and 2010 led to the discovery of 56 burials distributed over a period of time between the middle of the sixth century. B.C. and the first years of the second century. A.D.
The typologies of the tombs range from noble nucleuses with chambers with a complex plan to more modest structures, even of an individual nature, in pits and basins.
Most of the finds are kept in the “Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli” Archaeological Museum in Colle di Val d’Elsa and in the National Archaeological Museum of Siena (Chigi Zondadari Collection).
Educational workshops held on site give the opportunity to spend the day in the park with simulated archaeological excavations, the study of the landscape and the working of clay.
